First question: will it fit your door?

Most failed smart lock purchases fail on measurement, not on specification. Before recommending anything we need the door thickness, the material (wood, metal, glass), the opening direction and hinge side, and the dimensions of the existing lock case. Egyptian metal doors in particular often carry a lock body that no off-the-shelf smart lock replaces without machining. We photograph and measure the existing lock first — which is what prevents a return after purchase.

Types of smart lock

• Mortise lock: replaces the entire lock body — the strongest option and the standard for main apartment doors.
• Rim lock: mounts on the inner face of the door, easier to fit and common when upgrading without changing the door.
• Smart deadbolt: replaces only the bolt while keeping the existing handle — the least invasive option.
• Cylinder replacement: swaps the cylinder alone, the fastest upgrade for a rented apartment.

Opening methods — and the rule of two

Fingerprint, PIN, card, app and mechanical key. The practical rule is to keep at least two independent methods active, one of which works with no power and no phone. A lock whose only route in is an app will eventually leave somebody standing outside their own home.

Batteries: the two questions to ask

How long do they last in normal use, and what warns you before they die? A good lock warns for days or weeks with a beep or an app alert. More important still is the emergency power contact — a point on the outer face that lets you power the lock from a phone power bank and open it after a flat battery. We confirm it exists before fitting, because it is the difference between a minor inconvenience and calling a locksmith.

Setup we do that is usually skipped

We change the default administrator code on site — an unchanged factory code is the most common genuine weakness we find on locks already in service. We enrol fingerprints properly rather than taking one rushed scan, configure self-expiring temporary codes for rented properties, and show you how to delete a user, which is the operation people actually need and rarely remember.

When a smart lock genuinely earns its place

Short-term rental apartments with changing guests, offices with staff turnover, doors shared between family members, and clinics whose staff arrive at different times. For a door that only ever admits the same two people, a good mechanical lock remains an entirely rational choice — and we tell our customers so.
