That breadth matters because a smart home is assembled from many small parts, and the difference between a system that works and one that annoys is usually whether the right small part was available rather than whether the brand was famous.

Check the neutral wire before buying anything

This is the surprise most customers hit. Most smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box, and many older Egyptian buildings simply do not have one. There are three ways round it: switches designed to work without neutral, small modules fitted behind the existing switch in the ceiling-rose box, or pulling a new wire if the property is under fit-out. Open one switch box and check first — it changes which products you should be looking at.

Protocols and what they mean in practice

Wi-Fi devices are the easiest start and need no hub, but each takes an address on the router and dozens of them will slow an ordinary home router. Zigbee needs a gateway, but every mains-powered device also repeats the signal, so coverage improves as you add devices instead of degrading — the decisive difference in large apartments and villas.

Where to start, in order of payoff

• Lighting: the highest daily payoff, plus motion-triggered lights in corridors and bathrooms.
• Air conditioning and IR appliances: one IR blaster controls the AC and TV for very little money.
• Leak and smoke sensors: the cheapest items and the ones that protect property most.
• Motorised curtains: relatively expensive, and the change people notice most.
• Smart locks and intercom: practical integration with the rest of the system.

Two things we insist on

First, the manual switch keeps working — lights must never depend on an app opening or an internet connection. Second, automation logic stays local in the gateway wherever possible, so saved scenes keep running with the internet completely down.

A leaving scene that kills all lighting and air conditioning with one press; corridor and bathroom lighting on motion at night at low brightness; the water heater cutting power automatically after a set period; and an instant alert on a leak under the sink or behind the washing machine.
