The brands we carry and where each fits

Falcon stocks Hikvision, HiLook, Dahua and Smart Zoom. They are not interchangeable. HiLook is Hikvision's value line and is the sensible choice for a shop, a flat or a small office. Hikvision and Dahua main lines carry the larger sensors, better low-light performance and the analytics that matter on commercial sites. Smart Zoom competes on price for straightforward coverage where identification at distance is not the goal.

Resolution: what it buys and what it costs

2MP (1080p) remains adequate for a small shop or an apartment entrance. 5MP and 8MP matter when you need to identify a face or read a plate rather than simply see that someone was present. But resolution multiplies storage: an 8MP camera on an undersized recorder often keeps fewer days than a 2MP one would. You gain detail and lose history — which is why we size the disk against the retention you actually want.

Sensor size beats megapixels after dark

Two cameras can both be 5MP while one is unusable at night. The difference is sensor size and lens aperture: a larger sensor gathers more light per pixel. If night performance matters, ask about sensor size and low-light rating rather than the headline number on the box.

IP or analogue HD?

Analogue HD runs over coaxial cable, costs less per camera, and is the sensible upgrade where a building already has coax from an older system. IP runs over network cable with PoE, so one cable carries power and video; it scales better and supports higher resolutions and smart analytics. For a new installation of any size, IP is normally the better long-term decision.

Lens choice: the trade-off rarely explained

A wide 2.8mm lens shows a whole room but renders distant faces tiny. A 6mm or longer lens shows a corridor or gate clearly across a narrow slice. Trying to cover a large yard with one wide camera is the classic error: a picture of everything and useful detail of nothing. Two correctly aimed cameras almost always beat one "wide" camera.

Night vision: infrared or full colour

Traditional infrared gives a black-and-white image, and its stated range assumes an open scene — a nearby wall reflects the IR and washes out the picture. Full-colour night cameras pair a very sensitive sensor with a warm LED and retain colour after dark, which is decisive when the description you need is "a man in a red shirt".

What fails in the Egyptian climate

• Dust and heat: IP66 is the outdoor minimum, and a camera in direct summer sun needs shade or a sun shield.
• Surges: unstable mains and lightning destroy more cameras here than any other cause; surge protection on long outdoor runs pays for itself once.
• Cable: the most common hidden fault. Proper coax or Cat6 with copper conductors — never copper-clad aluminium.
