Choosing the right speaker for the space

The wrong speaker in the wrong space is behind most sound systems that end up described as "not good". Each type was designed for a different situation:

• Ceiling speakers: even coverage in offices, corridors, clinics and showrooms. Many speakers at low volume are far clearer than a few at high volume.
• Horn speakers: high output and long throw for yards, factories, car parks and open areas.
• Column speakers: narrow vertical dispersion that reduces echo, which makes them the first choice for mosques and halls with reflective surfaces.
• Wall and box speakers: for restaurants, cafés and shops where music is the main use.

100V line or low impedance?

This is the first decision and it governs everything after it. A 100V line system connects many speakers on one pair of wires over long distances with little loss and sets each speaker's volume individually — the standard for mosques, schools, factories, hospitals and any zoned building. Low impedance gives higher fidelity over short runs and suits restaurants, cafés and halls. Choosing wrongly here cannot be fixed later by buying a larger amplifier.

Sizing the amplifier

Add up the wattage of all speakers, then choose an amplifier with clear headroom above that total. An amplifier run permanently at its limit overheats and distorts — the reason a system that sounded fine in month one sounds harsh by month six. Headroom is not waste; it is service life.

Example packages

• Medium mosque: 100V amplifier + column speakers on the side walls + preacher microphone + adhan microphone + source unit. Clarity of speech matters here, not volume.
• Restaurant or café: mixer + low-impedance amplifier + ceiling speakers spaced every few metres + music source, with a separate zone for the outdoor terrace.
• Factory or warehouse: 100V system + horn speakers on the columns + paging microphone with priority that mutes music during announcements.
• School: 100V system + ceiling speakers in classrooms + horns in the yard + a zone selector so a single floor can be addressed.

Echo and microphone feedback

In halls of glass, marble and bare concrete the real enemy is reflection, not lack of power. Adding wattage to a reflective room makes it worse. The answer is directional speakers positioned ahead of the microphone line rather than behind it.

Linking to emergency evacuation

In many premises the sound system doubles as the evacuation announcement system tied to the fire alarm. If that is your situation the specification changes: battery backup and priority override become mandatory, and it must be planned with the fire system rather than added afterwards.
