Living with a fingerprint lock day to day

A fingerprint lock is judged over years on two things that are rarely discussed at the point of sale: how it behaves when the battery dies, and how easy it is to add and remove people.

Every fingerprint lock runs on batteries, typically four AA or AAA cells lasting six months to two years depending on use. Every good one has an emergency power input — usually USB — so a power bank opens the door if the batteries die while you are out. Confirm this exists and carry the mechanical key. A lock with no emergency power and no key override is a lockout waiting to happen.

Enrolment and removal is the other daily reality. Adding a family member should take under a minute. Removing one — after a domestic worker leaves, for example — should be equally quick and should be something you can do without the manual. Locks that require an obscure key sequence to delete a user end up with old fingerprints still enrolled years later.

Sensor quality shows up in cold, dry weather and with worn fingers. A good optical or capacitive sensor reads first time; a cheap one needs three attempts, and after a few weeks of that people prop the door or stop using the lock.
