What phone-operated locks are good at, and their limits

A lock you can open from your phone is genuinely useful for a specific set of situations, and understanding them prevents disappointment with the rest.

The strongest case is temporary access. Letting in a delivery, a cleaner or a guest arriving before you, without cutting a key or being there, is something no mechanical lock can do. A time-limited code that expires by itself is the feature people end up using most.

The second is knowing. A log of who opened the door and when settles questions that otherwise cannot be settled — whether the cleaner came, what time a teenager got home, whether a contractor left when they said.

The limits are worth being clear about. Bluetooth locks work at the door, not from another city — convenient and independent of your internet. Wi-Fi locks work from anywhere and depend on your connection and their cloud service. Neither is better in the abstract; a Bluetooth lock that never fails is more useful than a Wi-Fi lock that depends on a service that may not exist in five years.

Whichever you choose, keep the mechanical key. Every phone-operated lock should be openable without a phone, and every household should know where that key is.
