Where to start so you do not end up with five apps

The usual smart home mistake is buying devices one at a time — a bulb here, a plug there, a camera from somewhere else — and ending up with four apps that do not talk to each other. The result feels less convenient than the switches it replaced.

Pick the platform before the devices. In Egypt the two realistic choices are eWeLink (Sonoff) and Tuya/Smart Life, both of which cover switches, lighting, sensors and locks and both of which work with Google Home and Alexa. Whichever you choose, buying everything within that ecosystem is worth more than saving a little on an individual device.

Start with the things you actually repeat every day. Lighting you switch on and off at fixed times, the water heater, and one or two sockets. Automation only feels useful when it removes a repeated action; automating something you do twice a month is a novelty you will stop using.

The one piece worth planning early is the wall switches, because they involve the electrician. Doing them during a renovation is straightforward; doing them afterwards means opening walls. Everything else — bulbs, plugs, sensors — can be added at any time with no disruption.

A sensible first phase

• Choose one ecosystem and stay in it
• Smart switches for the lights you use daily
• One smart socket for the water heater or air conditioner
• A door sensor and a motion sensor to learn what automation feels like
• Voice assistant only after the basics work reliably
