What remote control is genuinely good for

Controlling the house from your phone sounds like a convenience feature and is mostly a reassurance feature. The things people actually use it for, months in, are narrower and more useful than the marketing suggests.

The first is checking rather than switching: did I leave the heater on, is the gate closed, did the cleaner arrive. A status view is used far more often than a control. The second is the holiday case — being able to switch lights on in the evening from another country genuinely deters opportunists, and costs nothing once the switches are in.

The third, and the one that repays the investment fastest, is conditional automation rather than manual control: the pump that must not run dry, the freezer that must not lose power silently, the water heater that should switch off if nobody is home. These are jobs a phone app performs badly and an automation rule performs perfectly.

A practical note on reliability: anything you depend on should keep working without internet. Good platforms support local control on the same Wi-Fi network, so the switch on the wall still works when the connection is down. Check this before buying — a smart switch that becomes a dead switch during an outage is a genuine problem, not a theoretical one.
