Making lighting scenes people actually use

Smart lighting gets bought for colour and kept for dimming and scheduling. Colour is used enthusiastically for two weeks; brightness control and timing are used every day for years.

A scene is simply several lights set to particular levels together, triggered by one action. The scenes that survive are the ones tied to a moment that already exists in your day: leaving the house, sitting down to watch something, going to bed. Building a scene for a moment you do not actually have produces a button nobody presses.

Two technical points decide whether dimming works properly. First, the bulb must be dimmable — a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer will flicker, buzz or simply refuse to dim, and the dimmer usually gets blamed. Second, a smart dimmer needs a neutral wire at the switch box. Many older Egyptian installations do not have one, and that single fact decides whether you can use smart switches or need to use smart bulbs instead.

Scenes worth setting up first

• Leaving home — everything off except the entrance light
• Evening — living areas at reduced brightness, warm colour temperature
• Night — corridor at very low level so nobody needs the main light
• Away — a plausible evening pattern that runs while you travel
