Securing farms and agricultural land

Agricultural sites break the assumptions almost every security product is built on: no mains power at the perimeter, distances measured in hundreds of metres, no internet, and a boundary far too long to cover with cameras.

The workable approach is to give up on covering the boundary and concentrate on the points that matter — the gate, the equipment store, the pump house, the fuel store and the packing area. These are where the actual losses happen. Fuel, pumps, cable and tools disappear from farms far more often than crops do.

Power and connectivity are the real engineering problems. Solar with battery backup at remote points is often more practical than trenching power hundreds of metres. For connectivity, design the system to record locally with a large drive and sync when a connection is available, rather than depending on a live link that will not be there.

For the boundary itself, detection beats observation. Beam detectors and fence sensors covering the likely approach routes, linked to a camera that then looks at the alerted area, cost a fraction of continuous coverage and produce something a person can actually respond to.
