What a factory needs that an office does not

Factory security has two objectives that pull in different directions: protecting the site, and not obstructing production. A system that slows the line or creates a queue at shift change will be worked around within a week.

The gate is where most of the value sits. In a manufacturing site, the significant losses are usually goods leaving through the legitimate exit rather than intruders arriving over the fence. Cameras covering the weighbridge, the loading bay and the vehicle gate — positioned to read plates and see what is loaded — protect more value than a dozen cameras inside the halls.

Environment drives the equipment choice more than in any other setting. Dust, vibration, wash-down areas, temperature extremes and electrical interference from heavy machinery all shorten the life of standard equipment. Sealed housings, shielded cabling and separated power feeds are not upgrades here; they are the specification.

Shift-change throughput decides the access design. Whatever verification you choose has to admit the whole shift in a few minutes. This is where a fast card reader at the gate combined with biometrics on internal restricted doors is almost always the right split.
