Meeting civil defence requirements without surprises

For most commercial premises in Egypt, the fire alarm is not only a safety decision — it is a licensing one, and the approval process is where projects get delayed. Planning for it from the start costs nothing; discovering it at the end costs weeks.

The recurring pattern is a system installed to a reasonable standard but without the documentation the inspection needs: no drawings showing device positions, no zone chart at the panel, no record of who commissioned it. The hardware passes and the paperwork does not, and the business waits.

Get the drawings and the zone chart produced as part of the installation rather than afterwards. A zone chart mounted at the panel showing what each zone covers is both a requirement in most cases and genuinely useful the first time the panel activates at two in the morning.

The other frequent finding is coverage rather than equipment — a store room, a plant room or a stairwell left without detection because it was not in the original brief. Walk the whole premises against the drawing before booking any inspection, including the spaces nobody uses.

Have these ready before inspection

• Layout drawing showing every detector, call point and sounder
• Zone chart displayed at the panel
• Commissioning record and test results
• Evidence that every enclosed space is covered, including plant rooms
• A maintenance arrangement in place
