What makes an industrial fire system different

A factory fire alarm is not a scaled-up office system. Dust, fumes, heat and constant machinery noise all break assumptions that ordinary detectors are built on, and specifying the wrong detector type is the most common and most expensive error.

Optical smoke detectors are the default in offices and a poor choice in dusty environments — flour, sawdust, textile lint and cement dust all trigger them. After a few false alarms staff start ignoring the panel, and a system nobody trusts is worse than no system. Heat detectors, or beam detectors across a large open span, are the correct answer in those areas.

Ambient noise decides the alarm devices. A sounder that is clearly audible in an office is inaudible next to running machinery, which is why industrial areas need higher-output sounders and, in the noisiest areas, visual beacons as well. Sound levels should be verified with the machinery running, not on a quiet Sunday.

Zoning matters more in a factory than anywhere else, because the response differs by area. A detector in the paint store is a different situation from a detector in the canteen, and a panel that only says "fire" without saying where wastes the minutes that matter most.
