Addressable or conventional: how to decide

A conventional panel divides the building into zones and tells you which zone triggered. An addressable panel identifies the individual device. That single difference drives cost, installation and, in a large building, how quickly anyone finds the fire.

For a small building — a shop, a villa, a small office over two floors — conventional is entirely adequate. A zone is small enough that "zone two" means you know where to look. It is cheaper, simpler to install, and simpler for a local technician to maintain.

The threshold where addressable becomes the right answer is roughly when a zone gets large enough that searching it wastes real time, or when the number of devices makes conventional wiring impractical. In a multi-storey building or a factory of any size, being told the device rather than the zone changes the response completely.

Addressable systems also make maintenance considerably easier, because the panel reports which specific detector is dirty or faulty rather than telling you something in zone four needs attention. Over a ten-year life in a large building, that alone often justifies the difference in price.
