A realistic first-week setup plan

Setting up an attendance device is not a one-hour job, and treating it as one is why so many sit unused. Plan for a week, mostly spent on people rather than hardware.

Day one is physical: mount the device at a sensible height near the entrance staff actually use, run power and network, and confirm it reaches the server. Mounting it somewhere convenient for the cabling rather than convenient for the staff is a decision you pay for daily afterwards.

Days two and three are enrolment. Budget roughly a minute per person for fingerprint and two for face, and enrol in small groups rather than all at once. Identify the people whose fingerprints read poorly during enrolment, not on their first Monday — give them a card as a backup immediately.

Days four and five are the parallel run: keep the old process going alongside the new one and compare the two. Every discrepancy in that week is a rule you have not configured correctly, and finding them now costs nothing. Going live without a parallel run means finding them in the payroll run, in front of everyone.

Setup checklist

• Mounted at the entrance staff genuinely use, at reachable height
• Network reachable and time synchronised with the server
• Shifts, grace periods and leave types configured before enrolment
• Backup verification method issued to anyone with poor fingerprints
• One parallel payroll cycle before switching off the old process
