Why mosque sound is a different engineering problem

A mosque is one of the hardest rooms to get sound right in, and the reason is architectural. Hard reflective surfaces, a domed ceiling that focuses reflections, and a large volume with few absorbing materials all conspire to turn clear speech into an echo that arrives after the original.

The instinct is to add power. That makes it worse: more energy into a reflective room produces more reflection, and intelligibility falls even as loudness rises. The correct approach is more speakers at lower individual output, placed closer to the congregation, so each listener hears their nearest speaker well before the reflections arrive.

Distributed ceiling or column speakers spaced through the prayer hall almost always outperform two large horns at the front. The difference is dramatic in a domed space, where a single high-output source aimed down the length of the hall creates a focused reflection off the dome that arrives as a distinct echo.

Microphone choice matters as much as the speakers. A directional microphone that rejects sound from behind is what allows a usable level without feedback, and positioning it correctly relative to the nearest speakers is the difference between a system that works and one that whistles whenever the level is raised.

What a good mosque system needs

• Several distributed speakers rather than a few loud ones
• A directional microphone positioned out of the speakers' direct path
• An amplifier with enough headroom to run well below its limit
• Zone control so the courtyard and hall can differ
• Level set for intelligibility rather than volume
