Designing a paging system people can actually understand

A public address system in a factory, a school or a hospital is judged on one thing: whether an announcement is understood the first time. Everything else is secondary, and speech intelligibility is a design outcome rather than a product feature.

The main enemy in an industrial space is not machine noise but reverberation from hard surfaces. As with a mosque, the answer is more speakers at lower output distributed through the space, so the direct sound reaches each listener well ahead of the reflections. Horn speakers are used outdoors and in very noisy areas because they concentrate their output, not because they are louder.

Zoning is essential in any facility of size. You want to be able to address one production hall without interrupting the offices, and you want an all-call that overrides everything for emergencies. That priority logic — emergency overrides paging, paging overrides music — is configured at the amplifier and matters enormously the one time it is needed.

For any facility with an evacuation requirement, the paging system and the fire alarm should be designed together. Retrofitting evacuation messaging onto a background music system afterwards rarely meets requirements and usually means replacing the amplifier.
