Why basements lose signal and what actually fixes it

A basement has no mobile signal for a simple physical reason: the earth and reinforced concrete between you and the mast absorb the radio energy. No device placed in the basement can create signal that is not there — which is why a booster is a relay, not a generator.

Every working installation has the same three parts: an outdoor antenna somewhere with usable signal, an amplifier, and one or more indoor antennas distributing the boosted signal below. The whole system depends on the first part. If the outdoor antenna position has poor signal, the amplifier simply amplifies poor signal.

Separation between the outdoor and indoor antennas is the detail installers get wrong. Too close together and the amplifier picks up its own output and oscillates, which produces a system that works for a minute then shuts itself down. Vertical separation through a floor slab is usually the practical answer in a basement installation.

One important legal point in Egypt: installing a mobile signal booster requires authorisation from the National Telecom Regulatory Authority. An improperly installed booster can interfere with the network for everyone nearby, which is exactly why it is regulated.
