Making mobile alerts useful rather than ignorable

An alarm that notifies your phone sounds like a complete solution and becomes useless the moment it cries wolf. The design goal is not more alerts, it is that every alert means something.

The first thing to configure is which events notify you. An intrusion alarm should always alert. A door opening during working hours should not. Systems that notify on every event train you to swipe the notification away, and the one that mattered gets swiped away with the rest.

The second is verification. An alert that says "motion detected" leaves you guessing; an alert with a camera image attached lets you decide in two seconds whether to call someone. Linking the alarm to even one camera at the entry point changes the system from something that worries you to something that informs you.

The third is what happens when you are unreachable. A notification to a phone in a meeting or on a plane achieves nothing on its own. A local sounder that is genuinely loud outside, plus a second contact who also receives alerts, covers the case the app cannot.

Configure alerts so they stay meaningful

• Only genuine security events push a notification
• A camera image attached to the alert where possible
• A second recipient for when the first is unreachable
• A loud external sounder regardless of notifications
• Regular test alerts so you know the chain still works
