Where wireless is the right choice and where it is not

Wireless alarm systems removed the main obstacle to protecting a finished building: cabling. In an occupied flat or a completed villa, a wireless system installs in hours with no damage, and for most homes that is the deciding factor.

The trade-offs are batteries and range. Every wireless device has a battery that will need replacing, typically every one to two years, and a system with twenty devices means a battery task several times a year. Good systems report low battery clearly; cheap ones fail silently, which is the worst possible failure in a security device.

Range is affected by what is between the device and the panel. Reinforced concrete floors and metal doors cut wireless range far more than the specification suggests. In a villa over three floors, the panel position matters enormously, and a repeater is often needed rather than optional.

Wired remains the better answer wherever cabling is possible — during construction, in a renovation, or in a commercial building with accessible ceilings. It has no batteries, no range limit and nothing to interfere with. The choice is genuinely about the building, not about which technology is better.
