Using one system for both entry and attendance

Combining access control and attendance in one device is attractive — one reader, one enrolment, one database — and it works well provided you understand what you are actually recording.

An access controller records that a credential opened a door. An attendance system records that a person started and stopped working. These are usually the same event and occasionally not: someone who steps out for twenty minutes generates two door events that may or may not mean a break, depending entirely on how you configure the rules.

The configuration that makes combined systems work is designating specific readers as attendance points. The main entrance reader counts toward attendance; the server room reader does not. Without that distinction, every internal door movement pollutes the timesheet and the reports become useless.

The genuine benefit of combining them is not saving on hardware, it is having one enrolment. When someone joins, they are added once; when they leave, their access and their attendance record close together. That single administrative fact prevents the most common security gap in any building — the former employee whose card still works.
