Choosing the credential that fits the workforce

Fingerprint and card are not competing technologies so much as different trade-offs between security, speed and administration, and the right answer depends on who is using the door.

A card cannot be forgotten at home the way a finger cannot, but it can be lent, lost or copied. That is the whole argument: cards are convenient and transferable, fingerprints are not transferable and occasionally unreadable. For a door where you need to know exactly who came through, a fingerprint or face is the only credential that means anything.

Throughput favours cards. A card reader admits people faster than a fingerprint reader, and at a main entrance at shift change that difference produces a queue. This is why many sites use cards at the main gate and biometrics on the doors that matter.

Practical workforce factors decide more of these projects than theory. Manual workers with worn fingerprints, staff wearing gloves, and anyone in a clinical setting all push toward card or face. Sites with a history of buddy-punching push firmly toward biometrics. Most well-designed systems end up using both, applied to different doors for different reasons.
