The practical differences between IP and analog exchanges

An analog PBX connects physical phones over dedicated pairs. An IP PBX puts calls on your data network as another kind of traffic. The technical distinction is straightforward; the practical implications for a business are where the decision actually lies.

IP wins clearly when you have multiple sites. Extensions across branches behave as one internal system with no call cost between them, and a home-working employee is just another extension. Achieving that with analog means paying for lines between sites.

Analog wins on simplicity and independence. It does not care about your network, your switch or your internet connection. In a site with unreliable power or an overloaded network, an analog exchange keeps working when the IP system does not — which is why we still specify analog for many single-site factories and workshops.

The hybrid case is the most common answer in practice: an exchange that takes traditional external lines but serves IP extensions internally. It lets you keep working during an internet outage while getting the flexibility internally, and it is usually the recommendation for a growing single-site company.
