Doing structured cabling so it lasts

Structured cabling is the part of a network nobody sees and everybody depends on. It is also the part that is hardest to fix afterwards, because it is inside walls and above ceilings.

The organising principle is simple: every outlet runs back to one central point, and nothing is daisy-chained. That central point — a rack with a patch panel and a switch — is what lets you change what any desk is connected to in seconds instead of chasing cables. Installations that skip the patch panel to save money become impossible to trace within a year.

Two limits matter. A copper run should not exceed 90 metres from the patch panel to the outlet; beyond that you need a switch closer to the desks or fibre between buildings. And data cable must not run parallel alongside mains power for long distances — cross at right angles where they must meet, or you will chase intermittent faults forever.

Label everything at both ends as you install, not afterwards. It takes minutes during the work and hours later, and unlabelled cabling is the single most common reason a straightforward change becomes a day's work.

A cabling job done properly includes

• Every outlet home-run to a central patch panel
• A rack with room to grow, ventilated and lockable
• Runs kept under 90 metres, fibre between separate buildings
• Data separated from mains, crossing at right angles
• Both ends labelled and a simple record of what goes where
