What actually drives the price, and where people overspend

A CCTV quote in Egypt is really four separate costs bundled together: the cameras, the recorder, the storage, and the labour and cabling. People compare quotes on camera price alone, which is why two quotes for "8 cameras" can differ by more than double and both be honest.

Cabling is the cost people never expect. Running cable through finished walls, across a roof or between two buildings takes hours and materials, and it is where a cheap installer saves money at your expense. Thin unbranded coaxial will pass the handover test and then degrade within a year, giving you a grainy picture that nobody can explain.

Storage is the other hidden line. Recording eight 5MP cameras continuously will fill a 1TB drive in roughly a week. If you need thirty days of history — which most businesses do for insurance or dispute reasons — you either need a much larger drive or motion-triggered recording. Decide this before you buy, because changing it later means changing hardware.

Where you should not economise: the power supply, the connectors and the cable. Where you reasonably can: resolution on interior cameras, and the number of cameras in phase one if you plan the cabling for expansion now.

Questions to ask any supplier before comparing prices

• Is the quote for supply only, or supply and installation?
• What cable type and gauge, and is it included in the price?
• How many days of recording will the included storage actually hold?
• Is the warranty on the devices only, or on the installation too?
• What happens if a camera fails in month seven — who pays for the visit?
